Paper Submission Guidelines

  1. An author wishing to present in GCoMSE 2017 will create a document consisting of a complete description of his/her ideas and applicable research results in six (6) to eight (8) pages only, including all text, figures and references.
  2. A maximum of two (2) papers may be submitted by the same first author. If the same first author submits two (2) papers, a supplementary publication fee is due for the additional paper.
  3. Papers should be formatted according to the Guidelines described here. All papers must be written in English and submitted in MS Word (.doc or .docx) for both the review process and final manuscript submission.
  4. Papers submitted will be reviewed by experts selected by the GCoMSE 2017 committee for their demonstrated knowledge of particular topics. Authors will be notified of the review results by email.
  5. Papers must be submitted by the deadline date. There will be no exceptions.
  6. Accepted papers must be presented at GCoMSE 2017 by one of the authors, or, if none of the authors are able to attend, by a qualified surrogate. The presenter must register for GCoMSE 2017 at one of the rates offered, and must register before the deadline given for author registration. Failure to register before the deadline will result in automatic withdrawal of your paper from the congress proceedings and program.
  7. The paper must be an original contribution. By submitting a manuscript to GCoMSE 2017, the author guarantees that it has not been previously published (or accepted for publication) in substantially similar form. Furthermore, no paper that contains significant overlap with the contributions of this paper either has been or will be submitted during the GCoMSE 2017 review period to any other journal or conference.
  8. If there are papers that may appear to violate any of these conditions, then it is the authors' responsibility to cite these papers, argue in the body of your paper why your GCoMSE 2017 paper is non-trivially different from these concurrent submissions, and include anonymised versions of those papers as supplemental material.

Paper Review Process

  1. Papers submitted will be pre-screened for conformity with submission guidelines and for overall appropriateness. Papers that pass the initial screening process will then be double-blind reviewed.
  2. The double-blind peer review process is employed to ensure that both authors and reviewers remain anonymous during the review process. Expert specialists within the fields of Construction, Material and Structural Engineering will be selected to perform the reviews.
  3. This process will take place prior to both the podium presentation at GCoMSE 2017 and the publication of the proceedings. Authors will receive feedback in the form of a peer review report. The paper peer review process and the outcomes presented in the review reports will be monitored and verified by the Publication Committee.

Paper Publication

  1. All papers presented at GCoMSE 2017 will be published in IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering that is indexed by SCOPUS, CPCI-S (Thomson Reuters, Web Of Science), Compendex, Inspec, INIS, Chemical Abstracts, NASA Astrophysics Data System and Polymer Library.
  2. Publication of papers in the proceedings is conditioned on a positive assessment by reviewers.

Presentation Guidelines during Technical Sessions

Podium presenters are encouraged to follow guidelines below, which have been designed to assist you in preparing an effective presentation for GCoMSE 2017.

1. Duration of Presentation

Your presentation slot includes:

  • 10 minutes of oral presentation assisted by PowerPoint slides.
  • 5 minutes of questions and answers hosted by the session Chairperson.

Note: The session Chairperson will be asked to strictly enforce the time limit on your presentation. It is recommended that you time your presentation to be one or two minutes shorter than the allocated time, to allow for the change-over time and introduction. For this, you may prepare roughly 10 slides, excluding the title and acknowledgement slides.

2. Preparation of Slides

Your slides should be prepared using Microsoft PowerPoint. Special attention must be paid to:

  • The font size chosen (i.e. no smaller than 20 point).
  • The choice of colour scheme for the background and text.
  • Avoiding text-heavy slides,
  • Avoiding injudicious use of object builds (animations) and slide transitions.
  • Keeping your presentation as simple as possible to avoid hardware and software conflicts. Audio and video files cause the most problems, so avoid using them.

3. Uploading PowerPoint File

All presentations must run on Windows operating system. Your PowerPoint file must be uploaded to the notebook or desktop computer provided at the session room at least 30 minutes before the start of the session. Name your PowerPoint file with your name. You may use a USB media device such as a memory stick or external drive to upload your file. Presenters are not allowed to use their own laptops, so as to avoid possible technical glitches.

4. Reporting to the Chairperson

You should report to the session Chairperson at least 15 minutes before the start of the session. Introduce yourself and provide him/her with a brief biography of yourself (3 to 4 lines), which will be used for your introduction.

Papers that are accepted must be presented at GCoMSE 2017, either by the authors themselves, or via proxy. In case a paper is not presented at GCoMSE 2017, it shall be deemed a "no-show". No-shows will be removed from post-congress distribution and will not be available on open-access publications.

Exceptions to this policy will be made in rare and unusual situations by the Organising Committee only if there is evidence that the no-show occurred because of unanticipated events beyond the control of the authors, and that every option available to the authors to present the paper was exhausted.

Authors of no-show papers wishing to appeal the no-show status of their paper must appeal by email to the Organising Committee no later than 14 days after the start of GCoMSE 2017 and must provide evidence to convincingly demonstrate that their absence was as a result of forces beyond their will and control, or that an erroneous decision was made.

Decisions on appeals will be made by the Organising Committee based on the supporting evidence provided. Failure to meet the appeals deadline will automatically result in rejection of the appeal. Possible evidence for exceptions include medical documents, death notices, airline ticket receipts, visa-rejection letters, and other official documents supporting the appeal such as visa-application receipts (proof that the application was submitted at least 8 weeks prior to the GCoMSE 2017 start date).

GCoMSE 2017 is proud to have Johor Bahru as its host city.

Johor Bahru is the southernmost city in the Malaysian Peninsula with a population close to half a million people. It is the capital of the state of Johor and the third largest metropolitan area in the country. Johor Bahru was founded in 1855 as Iskandar Puteri. The area gradually developed into an agricultural centre when the Chinese and the Javanese migrated into the area. The area was renamed "Johor Bahru" in 1862 and became the capital of the Sultanate of Johor.

Johor Bahru is best known as the cradle of Malay nationalism post-World War II. After the formation of Malaysia in 1963, Johor Bahru retained its status as state capital and was granted city status in 1994. A central business district was developed in the city centre during the 1990s and has since enjoyed bustling development after the introduction of Iskandar Malaysia, the main southern development corridor, in 2006.
